Quinn is Flying

Here’s an example of how creative my son Quinn is. We were exploring the Oakland Museum of California yesterday when we ran across a wall with this light display to set a mood for the history of the 1960’s.  But Quinn thought the wall could be used in a different way… to fly. A little creative camera work with my iPhone and ten minutes later it was posted to YouTube.

I Still Love Mother’s Cookies

I received a nice email from the cool folks at Mother’s Cookies:

As you know Mother’s cookies are back! And now that we here to stay we want to invite Mother’s Cookies lovers Share The Love. We know you are a fan so we wanted to let you know about this contest right away!

Share The Love
We are asking Mother’s Cookie lovers to create a short video about their love. Cookie lovers can visit http://www.motherscookies.com/ShareRegister.aspx and enter their video! The first 100 submissions that also tweet using #motherscookies before December 21, 2009 at Midnight will win a yummy cookie prize!

Well, twist my arm…

I’m still playing around with shooting and editing video on the iPhone. The front of this clip was cut off because I didn’t understand how the trim feature works. And the cutting and splitting in the ReelDirector app is not intuitive. Nonetheless, hope you enjoy Mother’s Cookies as much as I do!

Franz Frosted Animal Cookies Are… Good but Not Great

In my never-ending quest to find the ultimate in frosted/iced animal cookies, I recently came across Franz Frosted Animals. Having grown up on Mother’s Circus Animals, there was something obviously familiar with the white and pink cookies. There was something familiar with the taste as well; these are pretty good cookies.

They’re not quite up to Mother’s quality in terms of cookie size or frosting thickness. But I have to admit these are not bad in a pinch.

Our long National West Coast nightmare is over!

Kelloggs came through as promised and have reintroduced Mother’s Cookies back into stores in Western States. According to their press release:

Crestfallen cookie lovers once again can enjoy the sweet symbols of so many fond memories. Mother’s(R) cookies, the long-time family favorite, are making a comeback. With the same great taste fans remember, Mother’s(R) cookies made their highly anticipated return to store shelves in the Western region of the United States starting on May 4 – just in time for the 95th anniversary of Mother’s Day as well as the Mother’s(R) brand.

The Mother’s(R) cookies returning to the Western region of the United States include:

  • Chocolate Chip
  • Circus Animal(R)
  • Cocadas(R)
  • Double Fudge
  • English Tea(R)
  • Iced Lemonade
  • Iced Oatmeal
  • Macaroons
  • Oatmeal
  • Taffy(R)
  • Vanilla Creme

I have given the new cookies a taste taste and I’m very pleased to report that these are the genuine article. They taste exactly the same as the Mother’s Circus Animals we’ve loved over the years. The packaging of the Mother’s brand is basically intact as well, with the addition of the call-out “Your Favorites are Back!” Indeed they are!

Nabisco tried to get onto the “iced animal” bandwagon with their sub-par Nabisco Classics Iced Animal Cookies but failed miserably. Now, there’s no reason at all to purchase the inferior brand!  So, get a bag of Circus Animals or whatever your favorite Mother’s Cookie is, and support this brand so they never disappear from store shelves again.

Nabisco Classics Iced Animal Cookies – Don’t Be Fooled

One of my favorite treats of all time were the Mother’s Circus Animal Cookies. These pink and white animal cookies with sprinkles tasted great when produced by Mother’s Cookies for generations. Unfortunately, Oakland-based Mother’s went out of business last year. I really loved these cookies, especially the seasonal orange and white ones for Halloween or the green and red ones for Christmas.

So, it was with an unexpected surprise that I saw Nabisco’s brand new Nabisco Classics Iced Animal Cookies. These are so new that I can’t find any information about these new cookies. But there they were at my local Lucky supermarket, so I snapped up a bag and raced home to taste my beloved animal cookies.

Big mistake.

I knew Circus Animals. Circus Animals were a friend of mine. Nabisco, these are no Circus Animals.

It’s hard to express the disappointment I had. It’s not that these cookies are bad per se. It’s just that they’re not the classic cookies I grew up with. The animal cracker has a lemon taste that clashes with the icing that in itself is not as sweet as Mother’s original.

So, unfortunately, I have to vote thumbs down!

Don't Be Fooled by Imitation Cookies!

There’s hope. Kellogg’s bought Mother’s recipes and promised to return those recipes to the marketplace in 2009. I’ll be waiting with bated breath.
